Objective
The project seeks to combine novel, unproven mechanical handling technology, with some known allied technology from diverse industries and introduce the integrated technology into the area of offshore (and onshore) drilling for hydrocarbon recovery. The technology will require substantial innovation in mechanical, structural, hydraulic and electronic disciplines together with integration of a form never before envisaged.
The concept, still in its outline form, is close enough to the market place that its application is relevant and visible, but is so far from being tried and proven that the risk is too high for immediate commercial adaptation. The project is therefore one of innovative engineering to create a highly mechanised and automated drilling system and then to drill a well at an onshore test site. This would be within tight timescale and financial constraints.
