Cooperation for open system interconnection networking in Europe

Objective

This project anticipates using public data networks and special communication software to connect to computing centres of universities as well as state and industrial research establishments, thus allowing the researcher to exchange data, software and messages on a European-wide basis. The project has the following aims:

- strengthening the European research infrastructure: As in the USA, a research network covering the whole of Europe could initiate and intensify cooperation between separate national research groups.

- the development and testing of new communication services: Academic research offers, in its heterogeneity in the use of computing, an ideal environment for the testing of new and diverse communication services.

- The development and running of open networks: The market acceptance of open (non-manufacture based) standards for data transmission is dependent on the extension of common standards but of equal importance is customer confidence in the applicability of those standards. A European Research Network offers, through the diversity of installed information technology equipment, an ideal environment for the pilot testing of open transmission standards. Such a demonstration project would also complement the standardization policy of the EC COMMISSION.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)
