VALIDATION OF RAW MATERIAL COMING FROM KENAF (HIBISCUS CANNABINUS)

Objective

This proposal aims to set up the technical and economical frame for the use of kenaf raw materials in the manufacture of kenaf by-products by achieving the following objectives :
1. General validation of kenaf raw materials. Validation discrimination by plant varieties. Setting up of profiles of quality of raw materials with regard to the demands of the industrial users;
2. Systemization of the processes (separation, pre-processing or hypercompaction) to be carried out with kenaf raw materials before the industrial processing;
3. Use of kenaf semi-industrial products in final non paper products (chipboards, growing media for fungi crops, composites, non wovens, ...);
4. General validation of the economical viability of kenaf-based final products, based on national and worldwide market researches of the products, as well as consequences in the environment and/or potential beneficial environmental impact arising from widespread use of kenaf-based materials;
5. Feasibility studies on the potential of kenaf production-process end use chains at regional levels.%

A number of research organisations will carry out the tasks. According to their experience in working with kenaf species, its agricultural cultivation or its paper use, and in the production technologies of final products. The consortium will work with kenaf species according to the present-day technical, economical and environmental demands (composites, non-woven, geotextiles, ...). Specifically, the project aims to categorize varieties based on functionality and to systematize the physical (separation, compaction, etc) or chemical processes (structure modification) used to homogenize the agricultural raw materials based on the intended end uses specifications in a number of industrial processes and applications (composites, non-wovens, etc) or as potting-mixtures for special agricultural productions (funghi crop). In short, the project will aim to study range of potential uses for kenaf on real
market needs by combining the technical aspects, the cost analysis of the different
productions, the evaluation of potential markets, and the feasibility of the possible
development of kenaf (production/use) at a regional level.
