An expert system of energy savings technologies for the process industry

Objective

Objectives

In rational use of energy problems, engineers have to identify the energy Best Available Technologies (BAT) that will satisfy the energy process requirements and constraints at minimum cost. The objective of this project is to develop an expert system that will a) propose the BATs by taking into account the energy requirements and the constraints of an industrial system, b) optimize the design parameters for each of the chosen BATs in a way that they comply with the energy requirements, and c) integrate the BATs in the model of the whole industrial process and select the Best Achievable process Configuration (BAC).

Technical Approach

The expert system that will be developed in this project will consist of a) an expert system shell b) a database and c) interfaces and supporting software.
The expert system shell will be a classic one and its development will start from an existing shell.
In the database, currently available technologies in several areas, like combustion, utility networks, diesel engines, gas turbines, etc. will be inserted.

Supporting algorithms will be developed for the expert system, that will identify the optimal design parameters for the chosen BATs and then will find the BAC.

An alternative expert system shell will also be developed, that will be based on the optimization method of Genetic Algorithms (GAs). This GA-based expert system shell will select the BATs to replace the existing ones and then will optimize their design parameters for a given industrial configuration. The development of this shell will start with the development of the basic GA operators and will continue with the development of the proper necessary GA-coding for the case.

Finally, the two developed expert system shells, along with the database, will be applied by the industrial partners in test cases in order to show their capabilities.

Expected Achievements and Exploitation

The outputs of the project will be:

- The expert system shell of energy saving technologies for the process industries, along with several supporting software that will determine the BAC.
- The Genetic-Algorithm-based expert system shell of energy saving technologies.
- The database of energy saving technologies.

Within 3 years, the database of energy saving technologies will be further developed with the inclusion of additional samples and user-friendly interfaces for the expert system shells will be implemented. It is envisaged that the products will be exploited commercially in EU countries, and possibly in other countries afterwards.
