Designs to avoid the need to travel in Europe

Objective

1. The Dante Consortium will carry out an intensive review of national and city data to determine changes in the pattern of travel over the last ten years by mode, distance and purpose. The research will concentrate on those trips which are important contributors to overall patterns of mobility and will determine the strategies which will be most effective in obtaining switching or substitution effects. An assessment framework will be established to assess the potential for change.

2. The main empirical part of the DANTE project will take a city in the five EU countries, Zurich and Bucharest to assess the nature and scale of trip reduction strategies. A comprehensive range of travel avoidance strategies will be covered. The assessment stage will make a synthesis of the city results to test comparability and transferability of results. It will identify the necessary conditions for successful implementation, the behavioral and institutional barriers and where most potential lies for improvement.

3. The main output will be the Good Practice Guide for cities and national governments which will summarise the opportunities for strategies to avoid the need to travel. Examples will be given where successful projects have been introduced and the necessary conditions for implementing. A major dissemination event will take place in Bucharest where the findings of the research will be presented and a workshop will establish whether the findings can be transferred to CEEC countries. Strong management will continue throughout the project.
