Emotions and mental health in the social and familial context in the case of somatoform disorders

Objective

This project is concerned with the comparative research of attitudes towards emotions and social, familial, interpersonal and personality related aspects of emotional behaviour between psychologically distressed and healthy people. The bio-psycho-social correlations will be investigated in the case of somatoform disorders. The following variables well be examined:

social stereotypes on emotions,
attitudes towards emotions and emotional behaviour in the families,
social support in interpersonal relationships,
personal emotional behaviour and
symptoms of psychological and mental disturbance.

The project will be realised as a cross-cultural co-operation between Russia, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.

In the chief investigation, 50 emotionally ill patients (somatoform disorders) and 50 healthy subjects each would be examined on various levels with the above procedure. Most desirable would be a distribution of 25 men and 25 women each in the respective sample survey. The sample group of patients would be examined at the Scientific Center of Mental Health at the Academy of Medical Science in Moscow. The sample group of healthy people would be examined by the group at the Institute of Pedagogical Innovations in Moscow. A transcultural comparison of data to existent and newly acquired data of the Western group is also projected.

The following results are expected:

Reliable and valid methods for the investigation of attitudes towards emotions and emotional behaviour in social, familial, interpersonal and personal contexts;
acquisition of new data regarding the connections among the attitudes towards emotional behaviour on various levels of the emotional health and illness, respectively;
elaboration on practical recommendations for psychotherapeutic practice;
Elaboration on methodological and theoretical prequisites for further cross-cultural and inter-cultural research, respectively;
acquisition of preliminary Russian-German cross-cultural data on the correlations between the attitudes towards emotions and aspects of emotional behaviour in social, familial, interpersonal and personal contexts.

The results would be summarised in a project report. Publications in peer reviewed scientific technical journals would also follow. In addition the results would be presented at corresponding national and international conferences.
