A European-wide offshore/nearshore statistical toolbox for timely wave Climate Assessment

Objective

Common to all wave data bases covering European waters is that they provide the user mostly with offshore or deep water data. Since, however, most of human activities and interests are concentrated in the nearshore area, where wave conditions tend to be less severe but with strong spatial variability, nearshore wave climate information is highly desirable.
It is the aim of the present proposal to develop a prototype tool (EUROWAVES) capable of quickly and reliably assessing the wave climate at a nearshore location, more or less enywhere in Europe, including the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Azores and the Baltic, with accuracy and spatial resolution meeting the requirements of most users. The proposed work will allow, at the next stage, the development of commercial packages and/or atlases giving users easy and timely access to coastal wave statistics for the European market, covering a whole range of applications from sediment transport studies to coastal engineering, wave energy assessment, biological ecosystems studies etc. There is also a longer term potential to adapt the methodology to any country worldwide.
This tool will be, simultaneously,
- An extensive database of wave data offshore of all European coasts, at an unprecedented accuracy.
- A specialised statistical software package for wave data analysis and simulation in deep and shallow water.
- A geographical background, covering the whole European nearshore area, that supports the presentation of a detailed geographical distribution of wave climate.
- Wave transformation models for deriving nearshore wave conditions and statistics at any location.
- Interfacing to hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and other specific coastal applications.
