Objective
The overall objective is to install at the Scientific high school "Leonardo da Vinci" at the Province of Perugia (Italy) a sun-breaker structure in steel and aluminium (south and north facade), a solar passive system with instantaneous convective loop integrated with a system of static heat recovery and a photovoltaic plant of 13,7 kWp. The primary aims are :
- the saving of energy 13650 kg/year gasoil, to reduce the electric lighting consumption by 4852 kWh and a production of electricity of 16440 kWh/y;
- elimination of health harmful materials and non environmental technologies;
- building modifications according to in force regulations
- respect of indoor welfare conditions.
The project is estimated to take 3,8 years in total to complete all the phases and additional benefits will include a meaningful reduction of pollutant emissions.
The project first step was the identification of the functioning shortages of the architectonic structure, making clear the causes and the existent correlations. The critical points can be summarised as follows :
- elevated thermal dispersion principally due to the glass surfaces low capacity of insulation and to the fittings low tightness.
- non-adequate air interchange in the classrooms, due to the lack of a ventilation plant (natural or mechanical)
- low protection from irradiation
- impossibility to divide in sections the classrooms illumination plant.
The projected solutions can be identified in the realisation of two elements with different functions :
A sun-breaker structure with the following functions:
- protect the glass surface from summer solar irradiation
- allow the transmission of the solar radiation towards the floor of the classrooms
- protect the convective loop from solar irradiation.
A solar passive structure with the following functions
: - external air heating
- static recovery of heat
- complete external air heating, in shortage of solar irradiation
- dynamic system for air interchanging
- classrooms night cooling system in hot seasons.
A solar photovoltaic plant with the following functions :
- clean energy production
- connection with the building electric grid
- rational use of energy in the building school
. The optimisation of environmental conditions has been searched for each surrounding, considering innovative and low cost technological solutions, related to the provided services. The project constitutes the first example of intervention aiming to involve the administration and technical staff of the Province of Perugia in a program for environmental and energetic recovery of provincial buildings.
The choice of a school building permits to consider a boundary case, where the problems of indoor living are often added to the hurried execution of the civil infrastructure that makes the users' living not comfortable.
