Objective
The overall main objectives of this shared costs action are:
- to achieve sign ificant cost reductions in cleaning, maintenance and replacement costs of expens ive heat exchangers (piping) in thermal conversion processes by reduction of the fouling, slagging and corrosion characteristics of Miscanthus for power and hea t generation by using biotechnology;
- complete integration of advanced biote chnology practices, agronomical measures and thermal conversion routes in order to yield the least fouling, slagging and corroding problems in thermal conversio n processes at the lowest possible costs for the whole bioenergy chain; and cos t-effective improvement of biomass fuel characteristics at the source.
The specific objectives are: fuel caused by Cl, K and S by minimisation of the co ncentrations of these elements in Miscanthus and minimisation of the combining effects of these elements - reduction of the fouling and slagging characteris tics caused by K, Ca and P; - development of molecular tools for breeding cove ring: - molecular genetic analysis of fouling, slagging and corroding componen ts;
To achieve the project objectives, the following activities are defined : 1. Improving genotypes with molecular techniques (molecular inheritance stu dy, transformation of Miscanthus genotypes); 2. Field testing of Miscanthus geno types in Denmark and Spain; 3. Fouling, slagging and corrosion tests (fundamenta l characterisation; fouling/slagging & corrosion experiments, thermal conver sion trials); 4. Evaluation including a financial/economic assessment. Project partners are: the Dutch Centre for Plant Breeding and Reproduction Research (CPR O-DLO), the Danish Institute for Plant and Soil Sciences (DIPS), the Spanish Ins tituto de Agricultura Sostenible (IAS), the Austrian Institute of Chemical Engin eering of the Technical University of Graz (TUG), and the Biomass Technology Gro up (BTG, Netherlands).
This proposed project is a logical follow-up of wor k done already in Europe and will utilise the available information in a very ef ficient and cost-effective way. This project is the first one on such a scale an d integrating the whole bioenergy chain while focusing on the main fouling, slag ging and corroding components in the promising herbacious energy crop Miscanthus .
