Obiettivo VALOREN aims to correct regional imbalances in the area of energy by three methods: making use of endogenous sources of energy, energy savings, and the rational use of energy by the use of appropriate technology. For the Alentejo, the following objectives have been defined :* mapping existing energy supply and use and drawing up an inventory of existing potential,* evaluating energy needs under different economic growth scenarios.* optimizing energy production, transportation and distribution systems,* developing a strategy of increased energy autonomy,* creating regional energy planning know-how.The work undertaken has made it possible to propose various energy saving actions in the region's principal areas of activity, in particular agriculture and marble production.A list of more than 200 projectsA sizeable list has been drawn up of projects which make use of renewable energy potential and could be eligible for support.AREA NUMBER OF PROJECTSbiogas 3biomass 100wind energy 3hydro-electricity 1photovoltaic systems 6thermal solar installations 118This table shows a substantial potential for biomass and solar heating. The total cost would be almost 1.5 billion escudos.Given the lack of regional data on energy supply and demand and on the economic behaviour of users, the first step has been to prepare studies to enable regional public and private entities to propose projects eligible for support under the VALOREN programme.PROJECT IDENTIFICATIONTo achieve this, a Regional VALOREN Support Group was set up. Its task has been to identify local energy development objectives which fit in with the overall regional development strategy. The next requirement was to identify activities which meet VALOREN criteria for subsidies.These fall into four categories :* use of renewable sources of energy and the rational use of energy,* use of private consultants,* information campaigns on the use of renewable energy and on technological innovation,* studies of potential sources of renewable energy.
