SUBSEA WELL TESTING SYSTEM FOR UNDERWATER MULTIPHASE PRODUCTION [PHASE 1]

Objetivo

The project is aimed at the design, fabrication and testing of an innovative subsea well testing system based on the utilisation of a two-phase separator, to provide for each well the production data needed for the reservoir management in those scenarios where conventional surface testing is not technically available or economically feasible. Particular reference is made to the subsea multiphase production used for the exploitation of offshore marginal fields.
The main results of the project are relevant to the fabrication of an experimental prototype of subsea multiphase well testing system that has been tested with different multiphase flows simulating the operating conditions in order to prove its performances.
The project allowed to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept and the high level of operability by means of tests on the system prototype (which was prepared for this purpose in a verson not adaptated for subsea use on account of the limitation of the project itself).
The proposed underwater well testing system is based on the integration of proven technology, that has to be finalized to the specific innovative application, with the technical innovations, mainly achieved in the instrumentation field, in order to provide a system that will be used in the near future.
In particular the System is mainly based on:
- two-phase test separator, to facilitate the multiphase flow metering operations
- "innovative" instrumentation, able to perform with oil/water mixture and with entrained gas and wet gas stream (entrained liquid in the gas stream)
- conventional instrumentation, modified for the specific application, for the monitoring of the gas phase mainly.
The application of a gas/liquid separator for the underwater well testing requires also the utilization of both "conventional" and "advanced/innovative" instruments, mainly to measure the fluid density, the water/oil ratio and the content in the liquid phase. In particular the instrumentation system is mainly composed by:
- separator control: Mainly it is necessary to avoid accumulations in the separator
- gas metering: One of the purposes of the SWTS is the monitoring of the gas flowrate, which is to be correlated with the liquid flowrate to achieve the GOR data.
- liquid line: particular attention is paid to the monitoring of the multiphase flow parameters such as: liquid flowrate, contents of entrained gas in the liquid phase and water oil ratio.
The measurement of these parameters constitute one of challenging problems on the multiphase technology. At present many systems and components are under development and their application in a subsea scheme is to be demonstrated, in particular when entrained gas in the liquid phase is expected.
- The control system is mainly divided into three parts:
- control of the subsea installation
- signal data processing, with the aim of correlating the signal of each instrument to provide the required data
- control of the instrumentation performance.
An innovative aspect would be the low efficiency level acceptance on the separator, due to the possibility to use "advanced" instruments, with the relevant signal data processing, for the measurement of the gas contents in the liquid phase and the measurement of the water/oil ratio.
On this regard an important role will have the experimental tests, carried out on the most significant components and on the whole system itself, with different multiphase flows simulating the operating conditions.
