Research on the management of accidentally radiation exposed persons

Cel

The consortium has been quite successful in promoting the pathophysiological basis of therapeutic approaches to overcome the acute radiation syndrome in man, using the most advanced technologies available.

There is no doubt that the Consortium of Scientists in Rotterdam, Paris, Rome and Ulm has very successfully contributed to the improvement of existing and the development of new approaches to manage accidentally radiation exposed persons.
It is the purpose of this proposal to suggest research activities relevant to the improvement of existing and the development of new approaches in the management of accidentally radiation
exposed persons. It is a response to the technical contents of the EC nuclear fission safety programme 1991-1993 in which
research tasks are described in the field of radiation syndromes and their treatment after radiation exposure of large parts of the body. The participating 4 laboratories are prepared to
perform research in 5 major areas : 1. Pathophysiology of
radiation induced alterations of the immuno-hematopoietic system, alterations of the immuno-hematopoietic system, the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems and the central nervous system
including connective tissue and stromal cell changes. 2.
Diagnosis of the radiation syndromes by preclinical and clinical approaches. 3. Prevention of the development of severe radiation syndromes. 4. Therapy of the radiation syndromes by the use of hemopoietic growth factors, by the modulation of the immune
responses and by new approaches in the use of bone marrow
reconstitution by stem cell transfusion. The collaborating
laboratories will perform clinical studies in patients subjected to total body irradiation in preparation for stem cell
transplantation and experimental research using several in-vivo and in-vitro models as well as biomathematical aproaches. The laboratories are well equipped to perform the necessary research using cell system, and cell biology tools as well as novel
methods of molecular biology.
