Objective 1) In the decorative polyester/aluminium system, coatings containing as much as 10 vol% pigment were successfully prepared and displayed final coating qualities better than those currently available. These same coatings also passed the industrial specifications developed for mechanical and corrosion resistance. Unfortunately the commercial exploitation of this powder has not been realised as it was found that during industrial trials that it suffered from both poor application properties as well as poor dry adhesion neither of which could be overcome.2) The production of coatings with high pigmentation levels in the protective polyester - MIO system was optimised at 30 vol%. At this level barrier protection was optimised and produced coatings with good abrasion and very good impact resistance, although their flexibility was low due to the high pigmentation level. Application properties were better than the decorative aluminium powder coating but it was felt by the exploitation committee that this system had limited advantages when compared to other competing powders.3) Mechanical encapsulation at elevated temperature has been successfully used to encapsulate very high pigment loadings in the nylon - zinc system and at the same time retain good application properties. However, poor flow and levelling during stoving leaves the final coatings highly porous and therefore offering no galvanic or corrosion protection.Powder coating is a high quality surface finishing technology used for Many techniques for more sustainable production methods in agriculture are known (organic farming, IPM) and EU and many member states encourage to the use of such techniques. Why then are they not more utilized? And why is there such a heterogeneity in the implementation in the different country? The project will focus on the barriers and driving forces and the social and institutional factors behind the dissemination or lack of dissemination of sustainable pro auction methods. Amongst them are the organisational learning and stakeholders' strategies to cope with the multi-dimension of sustainable development (economic viability, social values and preservation of nature) will be analysed. The dissemination process will be analysed in both Northern, Southern and Eastern European countries (Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Latvia), and will be done through a close collaboration between social scientists and agronomists. The objectives The general aim of the project is to analyze the barriers of the implementation of environmentally sound practices in European agriculture and to identify strategies to be strengthened, so that farmers and farmers' organisations can accelerate implementation. Specific objectives are: - to assess the current level of implementation of sustainable agricultural methods in Europe; - to explain the very unequal dissemination of sustainable agriculture; - to improve the dissemination of sustainable agriculture: to propose recommendations to local, national and European authorities. Method The main emphasis is on organisational processes and socio-economic issues and will include: - farm level research to describe and analyse conversion to organic farming and adoption of integrated practices, - analysis of institutional and social barriers and driving forces in different countries and regions through investigation of successes and failures in terms of implementation of more sustainable methods, - assessment of social strategies aiming to gain economic and environmental sustainability (e.g. networking, study groups, cooperatives).
