Visual sensing for optimised control of burner bank performance and enhanced plant lifetime ('VISCON')

Obiettivo

VISCON concerns the development of simplified, non-intrusive and dedicated optical detectors, capable of providing information that, though the incorporation signal processing algorithms to establish a relationship between the optical characteristics of a flame and its performance, emissions characteristics and associated degradation mechanics, can be used to evenly trim the flow of fuels between burners in an array and to assess burner performance and evaluating the degradation mechanics from slagging, fouling, which is of especial interest in the increasingly important area of co-utilisation of coals with biomass and waste fuels. Thus, the project targets will be the NOx reduction on 15 -20%, improve the thermal efficiency at 10% by primary flows control burner by burner and reducing the degradation mechanics in special fouling and slagging effects. Description of work:· The important collective features of the VISCON will be studied through the following tasks: Undertaking experimental studies using a down-fired coal test furnace. In this unit the regime of a full scale industrial boiler can be replicated with the advantage of immediate access though a number of ports for flame observation and the measurement of gas composition and velocity field from the flame to the flue· The development of a new neural network-fuzzy logic image processor to promptly relate the optical information in the appropriate from to the flame characteristics for flame stability, combustion efficiency and nitrogen oxides emission· Identification of the ash deposition propensities of the coal blends and their effect on the heat transfer and long term degradation of the heat transfer surfaces· Development of a prototype interpreter hardware and software and its integration within the developed segments· Demonstration of the complete system on a full-scale industrial boiler Expected Results and Exploitation Plans: The exploited and commercial plans are the following:· Neural Network software + Fuzzy-logic application software· Procedure to determine degradation mechanics. Commercial Procedure· Probes and test of the equipment prototype for ring case study. Experiences and report + installation, probes and tests of equipment prototype for each case study real plant; report on the situation; Know-how.· Pre-commercial prototype Equipment Tecnatom will be the responsible company for commercial applications.
