Character preservation and modelling in aesthetic and engineering design (FIORES-II)

Cel

FIORES II will improve the workflow in the early stage of product development. It will provide computer aided tools which are able to simultaneously handle styling aspects and engineering parameters. It will be possible to optimise engineering parameters while preserving the shape's aesthetic character, and vice versa. Application specialists will set up scenarios to show requirements for the tools. A mapping between character and aesthetic properties will be defined. For a formal structure between the styling character with fuzzy aesthetic terms and shape geometry, FIORES II will use artificial intelligence methods. For the shape enhancement process a multiple criteria optimisation tool will be adopted. The resulting SW prototype will enable designers to build, modify, communicate, compare, store, and retrieve CAD models using the shape's aesthetic character as input information.
The following exploitable results will be available at the end of the project:
* A new workflow for the definition and modification of products with aesthetically relevant surfaces which takes into account styling and technical constraints.
* A feasibility study for linking formal aesthetic properties to emotional terms describing the aesthetic character.
* Mathematical algorithms for extracting, comparing, preserving and optimising aesthetic properties.
* An operational software prototype to be evaluated within the end-users' workflows.

The project result will mainly be used for industrial development. The end-users involved plan to introduce the improved workflow and the FIORES II software to increase the efficiency of styling, improve communication of the design intent between stylists and designers, to be able to target faster and more precisely the design intent of the customer and preserve the product character (of various customers) for future work. They also intend to decrease the number of Physical Mockups in general.

The software suppliers involved in the project plan to use the project results, mainly the algorithms and software, to develop a marketable software product from it. They also plan to use the experience and know-how gained to provide consulting on FIORES II software and other results.
