Improving performance and life-cycle cost of machine tools through advanced materials (PRIMA)

Objetivo

Traditional materials used in Machine-Tool parts have high density when used in mobile parts, high thermal deformation, long delivery times and high energy consumption for part production. This project aims to develop M-T parts made in composite materials, which provide high specific characteristics and the possibility of designing the material under specific conditions. Polymer concrete provides high damping and thermal stability; it would be improved to be used also in mobile parts. This broadens the parts suppliers range for M-T and also the composite materials market. In order to clarify the availability of composites, some influencing parts will be selected, of three kinds of M-T, and redesigned in composite materials. If the improvement of the prototypes is as expected, a Design Handbook will be elaborated and training actions developed.
The main output of the project will be a prototype of every kind of Machine Tool within the project, i.e. a grinding machine (Danobat), a milling machine (Soraluce) and a machining center (Hüller Hille). Each of these machines will have at least two components made of composite materials. The outcome of the project will serve to prove the applicability of such materials in the Machine Tool sector. If results are as expected, Machine Tool builders will try to extend them to other components or machines.

To facilitate the application of advanced materials to Machine Tools, High Education Institutes will develop two guides for the design with such materials:
1.Composite Materials Design Guide for Machine Tool applications. This Guide will be confidential and their use will be restricted to the consortium partners. This handbook will contain basic information that allows machine tool designers to perform a preliminary design of the future components. By this way, the relations between designers and composite manufacturers will be more fluids in the future;
2.Handbook of Composite Material Applications in Machine Tool. This handbook will be public and it will contain an overview of the results of the project (technical and socio-economic).
