Detection of illegal drugs by isotope ratio mass spectrometry : improvement of sensitivity, widening of applicability and development of tests and reference data (ISOTRACE)

Objetivo

The fight against unlawful use of substances by athletes in sport and to animals used for human food chain are European priorities. Recently, the administration of steroid hormones with the same chemical structure as the natural ones is prevalent attempting to prevent detection of their misuse. Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry is appearing as a definitive tool for detection of this fraud. This project aims to increase the sensitivity needed to detect some of the recent abused compounds by measuring their 13C content and also to expand the applicability by measuring 2H content as a new diagnostic test. Developments will be leaded by public research groups experienced in drug testing together with a SME manufacturer for isotope ratio instrumentation. Applicability will be confirmed by additional testing laboratories. Outcomes will be instrumental prototypes, supporting data, publications and applicability for the next European Olympic Games.
