Objective Having a very high rate of recharging (>5x1000000), the electromechanical battery is considered to be most promising energy storage system for mobile and stationary applications therefore, the project proposed in the 2nd phase "FLYSAFE" is focused on safety and certification issues of high speed flywheel systems made of modern composite materials. Extensive material, rim and component testing also at elevated temperatures will supply reliable information concerning fatigue, durability and certification of advanced flywheel systems. Based on detailed analytical and experimental investigations of possible failure modes of composite flywheels, guidelines for the containment design will be established, additionally. The implementation of sophisticated systems measuring changes within the system, e.g. vibrations, is considered to be a feasible approach to improving reliability of supporting components. In this way the economical production and certification of a safe and high cycle recharging flywheel will be possible, so that the competitiveness of the EXPLORATORY Award "FLYSAFE-LIFE" partner CCM and EAST-4D is strengthened significantly.
