Rapid tooling for plastic industry in fashion trends using an innovative technique based on laser sintering of metallic powders

Objective

Plastic is the most often used material to manufacture goods due its qualities (cheap, light, recyclability). However, European plastic transformers, especially in fashion industries (toys, accessories, frame glasses) face a strong competition coming from Asian countries and need to find ways to reduce the lead-time from finished design production part and market. This project is based on an emergent rapid tooling technology for plastic injection moulds, based on stereo-lithography; the laser sintering of metal powders. This technology will allow the rapid production of print that could be put on standard moulds frames to use them on injection machines.

It is aimed by this project to produce mould:
- 30-50% cost reduction;
- 6 times quicker than with conventional technique: (4-6 days compared to 7-8 weeks)- directly usable for small serie (5000 parts) where she conventional rapid tooling technology produce tools for hundreds of parts.

To reach these goals, it will be necessary to work on several aspects:- formulation of metallic powders- laser sintering of these implementation of the prints made into standard moulds.
