Objective The Project addresses a novel concept in food packaging: the use of low cost, biodegradabel reinforced packaging (such as whey based) that may substitute at large extent aluminium foils, various low degradable plastics and high cost packaging materials. Currently used plastics cause substantial problems to municipal waste disposal due to large volume-to-weight number of packaging materials and their low biodegradable index. The new packaging materials will be thoroughly tested in conformity of the upgraded EU testing standards with respect to their mechanical properties and permeability do moisture, oils, gases and toxic substances such as inks, adhesives, solvents, etc. A novel approach based on ultrasonic scanning of foods for monitoring of the packaging materials performance will be developed and tested. An expert system will be developed for the "intelligent" design and selection of the substitute materials that satisfy the desired requirements including the shelf life parameter.
