Objective Foreseen ResultsTwo sensor types are to be developed, both utilising compact, robust and economic solid state components needing very low power levels to function. The first type of the personal monitor will be capable of giving simple audible warnings that a near dangerous exposure level has been received in a single event. The second type of personal monitor will be capable of accurately measuring the accumulated exposure of personnel to the chemicals. This proposal build on expertise developed within Copernicus Project CIPA-CT94 0206, to develop personal protection monitors suitable for use with : Ammonia, Halogens, Hydrogen Chloride gas and Hydrogen Fluoride gas.The primary objectives is to develop and characterise new, and previously unavailable, reagents for use in optical sensors for the protection of people in hazardous environments. The sensing reagents, methods of immobilization of these reagents and suitable detection techniques will be investigated. These sensors are then to be embedded into personal monitors with a warning capability for use in the work place.
