Development of light water reactor (LWR) reference electrodes

Objetivo

Due to nuclear power plant ageing, stainless steel core components accumulate extensive irradiation damage. This makes them susceptible to Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC). An important parameter for IASCC, like any other aqueous corrosion process, is the corrosion potential. Hence when monitoring the corrosion potential, we can distinguish between the case that IASCC is likely to occur or not. To measure the corrosion potential a reference electrode is needed. The main objective of the LIRES project is to develop such a reference electrode, which is robust enough to be used inside a LWR.
A four steps development trajectory is foreseen:
(1) Set test standard for Round Robin,
(2) Development of different reference electrodes,
(3) Round Robin test of these reference electrodes, followed by selection of the best reference electrode(s),
(4) Irradiation tests under appropriate LWR conditions in a MTR.
