Objective Improvement of understanding the seismic structural response andvulnerability of old existing masonry buildings. Assessment ofthe effects and actual efficiency of various practicalretrofitting techniques for upgrading their earthquake resistancecapacity. Examination of available design methods for assessingtheir capability to account for experimentally observed sructuralbehaviour. The objectives will be achieved through a number of seismicshaking-table experiments, to be performed mainly on two-storeymasonry building models exhibiting a regular configuration bothin plan and elevation. The material types will be limestone andsolid brick masonry, both with low-quality mortar. The effectsof different floor-wall connections will be analyzed in detail.Retrofitting techniques will be considered for repairing theseismically damaged structural models. For examining the influence of the base-excitation frequencycontent on the seismic behaviour of the masonry structures, softsoil conditions typical earthquakes will generally be used in theshaking-table experiments. The seismic excitation will beapplied up to the attainment of a severe damage state;subsequently, there will be appropriate structural retrofittingand then seismic testing will be repeated as before.Dynamic responses recorded during the tests will be analyzed forexamining the dynamic structural characteristics at variousdamage states, as well as the quantitative parameterscharacterizing the degradation degree. The main deliverable of this project will be a ready-to-usemanual for the practical application of these upgradingtechniques to old masonry housing structures.
