Experimental evaluation of technical interventions to reduce seismic vulnerability of old existing buildings

Objectif

Improvement of understanding the seismic structural response and
vulnerability of old existing masonry buildings. Assessment of
the effects and actual efficiency of various practical
retrofitting techniques for upgrading their earthquake resistance
capacity. Examination of available design methods for assessing
their capability to account for experimentally observed sructural
behaviour.


The objectives will be achieved through a number of seismic
shaking-table experiments, to be performed mainly on two-storey
masonry building models exhibiting a regular configuration both
in plan and elevation. The material types will be limestone and
solid brick masonry, both with low-quality mortar. The effects
of different floor-wall connections will be analyzed in detail.
Retrofitting techniques will be considered for repairing the
seismically damaged structural models.

For examining the influence of the base-excitation frequency
content on the seismic behaviour of the masonry structures, soft
soil conditions typical earthquakes will generally be used in the
shaking-table experiments. The seismic excitation will be
applied up to the attainment of a severe damage state;
subsequently, there will be appropriate structural retrofitting
and then seismic testing will be repeated as before.

Dynamic responses recorded during the tests will be analyzed for
examining the dynamic structural characteristics at various
damage states, as well as the quantitative parameters
characterizing the degradation degree.

The main deliverable of this project will be a ready-to-use
manual for the practical application of these upgrading
techniques to old masonry housing structures.
