Objective To study tsunami generation mechanisms, for example by theprocess of earthquake activity and by submarine or coastallandslides. To evaluate tsunami hazard in the European seas inorder to reduce tsunami risk in Europe.Theoretical analyses will include numerical simulation of majorpasttsunamis: in the Northern Sea, in Southern Italy, in the AegeanSea and in Portugal (e.g. the 1755 Lisbon event, with calibrationthrough recent tsunami data from the 28.02.1969 event), and dataacquisition by field and laboratory analyses.Statistical methods will be applied for identification oftsunamigenic sources.Geological analyses will be performed for the identification anddating of tsunami deposits. This will be achieved through coresampling in Greece (Aegean sea), in Italy (Gargano), and inPortugal (Algarve).Study of sediments in emerged bassins along the Norwegian coastfor identification and dating of tsunami deposits.Collection and analysis of existing tsunami data; testing andintercomparison of two tsunami warning systems: DETWS-Destructive Earthquakes and Tsunami Warning System (Portuguesesystem) and Tremors-Tsunami Risk Evaluation through seismicmoment from Real Time System (French system).Social and economic investigations (tsunami mitigation, population education). The following results will be obtained: Production of a unifiedcatalogue of European Tsunamis. Estimation of Tsunami frequencyfor particular coastal areas over long (geological) time scales.Assessment of Tsunami hazard and impact for particular coastalareas. Model simulation of European Tsunami events in Nordicseas, Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean sea. Intercomparisonof the performance of the two warning systems DETWS and TREMORS.
