Development of a protocol for ecoefficient wood harvesting on sensitive sites

Objectif

Forest machinery interacts considerably with the environment, and improper selection, operation and use of harvesting and extracting equipment can have major negative environmental impacts, particulaly on sensitive sites (e.g. soft soil, steep terrain, etc). By selecting appropriate forestry machinery and using it an integrated manner, negative envirenmental consequences of the cutting and extraction process can be minimised. This project aims to develop a protocol for ecofriendly wood harvesting on sensitive sites that integrantes the stages in the wood chain from cutting the tree to its extraction from the forest. The protocol will be in the form of guidelines/rules (with supporting software for certain elements in the chain) that integrate the selec- tion, operation and use of the various machines involved and that can be applied across the range of sensitive sites that exist in Europe. The aim is to use this to achieve cost effective ecofriendly operations which at the same time are ergonomically and socially sound.
