Process integrated thermal-chemical treatment of halogens containing materials as source of halogens free fuels for steel production and residues for noble metal recovery

Obiettivo

A prototype of a new process will be realized for a pretreatment of halogens containing materials to obtain "clean" fuels and purified noble metal containing residues from a process integrated separation of halogens. Possible feeds are electronic scrap, shredder light fraction, and the heavy fraction from plastic waste from domestic refuses. With this reactor concept, those fuels can directly be used as substitute of electrical energy during steel production and the residues can be used for recovery of noble metals by electrolysis. Due to the defined separation or immobilization of halogens a contamination of environment is prevented, the emission of halogenated compounds like dioxins into the atmosphere will be avoided. Furthermore, the need of conversion of problematic materials and wastes can be combined with the items "energy saving" and "clean processes". During this collaboration (a) a marketable reactor concept (b) a gas tight cascade of rotary kilns with separate conveyor screws, metal based bulk goods and gas tight connectors will be developed with a direct support of engineering companies and iron-works.
Suitable catalysts and scavengers have been worked out based on fundamental research. Those agents are for example sodium metasilicate, calcium oxide, sodium hydroxide and zeolites. Engineering and technical drawings of the rotary kiln and cycled spheres reactor Investigation and evaluation of the reaction parameters for pilot scale run by using lab scale rotary kilna nd ball reactor. The reaction temperatures 350 C and 450 C with a retention time for each level of about 60 to 120Minutes at each level. The demonstration project has been accepted by the commission and started 5/2002.
