Hydrogen removal from LWR containments by catalytic coated thermal insulation elements

Objective

An alternative concept for mitigation of hydrogen in the containment shall be developed. The concept focuses on catalytic coated surfaces of the thermal insulation of the primary system components. A first estimate shows that there are sufficient insulation surfaces to achieve adequate recombination rates. As compared to the installation of catalytic recombiner modules, physical considerations indicate potentials for a higher safety and better economic conditions of the alternative concept. The project shall combine experimental work, numerical simulation and safety/cost/benefit analysis to establish the concept as a product for the nuclear technology market.
