Gas-cooled fast reactor concept review studies

Objectif

Cost competitive nuclear fission power is likely to form a prominent part of a balanced energy supply mix in the next century. Within the nuclear park, fully developed commercial fast breeder reactors, able to meet the most up-to-date safety and economic targets, will be required if uranium is to be considered a truly sustainable energy source for future generations. The sodium-cooled fast reactor has reached an advanced stage of development, but the major factors influencing the choice of coolant in the early days of fast breeder development are less important today. Now there is a strong emphasis on in-service inspection, elimination of coolant chemical hazards, improved core safety parameters and the ability to incinerate wastes. In these respects a gas coolant could offer significant advantages over sodium.
