Minority Newspapers to New Media

Objective

Minority language newspapers throughout Europe are facing tough competition from net-based digital information services which have a good market penetration but which tend to be published mainly in the major languages. Minority newspapers therefore need to harness the new technologies to their advantage if they are to survive this cultural invasion.
MNM aims to implement a series of innovative and economically viable product ideas to enable minority language media to increase their market penetration by reaching a more dispersed as well as by increasing their competitiveness across cultural and linguistic barriers.
The project aims to bring together a number of minority language newspapers across Europe for the purpose of analysing the potential of uses of the applications proposed by NMN.
The project initially will focus on the following applications:
- the use of automatic syntactical translation software
- the uses of WAP and multiportal services
- remote and personal printing of media
Results :The results of the project will comprise a number of reports, covering: cost/benefit analysis of solutions investigated; market impact analysis for remote printing; market and impact analysis for translation and new format technologies; market analysis for WAP services.
The consortium plans to produce a PC based demonstration of the applications of the technologies investigated.
Finally, the results of the findings will be disseminated at the 1st meeting of the European Association of Minority Dailies in 2002. The project will also establish a web site where the general findings will be made available.
