Obiettivo The objective of EVENTS project is to research new computer vision techniques and real-time approaches that makes possible an innovative Image Interpolation system for multi-view presentations of TV transmissions in wide scenarios such as stadiums, theatres and concert halls. New developments will add interactivity to broadcasting of sports or cultural events by letting the user select his point of view in the virtual scenario purposed. Rather than trying to build a strict 3D environment, the project will focus its efforts in image projection techniques based in interpolation methods that will allow the system to compose virtual images at the position selected by the user from video images in nearby physical cameras. The two prototypes in the project will Cover two different applications: a low cost system for still images in applications such as football replays or slow video and a high end multiprocessing application for real-time moving images.Work description:Research activities in the project will be determined by two important activities: computer vision research and development of suitable real time approaches. In the first case, the project will contemplate a new approach to image interpolation based on seed matches and propagation followed by regularisation and robust triangulation. Computer vision research will undertake two phases. In the first phase, efforts will be focused in searching solutions to image interpolation problems without much concern real-time. Most basic image analysis algorithms will be developed during the first phase. Outcomes from the first phase will be materialised in the prototype meant for still images. The second phase will attack the real-time problem. Activity in this phase will consist mainly in optimisation of Image Processing algorithms and research of new less processing hungry computer vision approaches. As result from the second phase the prototype for moving images will be obtained. Real-time approaches, on the other hand, will be lead by progress in computer vision tasks during phase 2. Activities in this field will be carried out in the design of the multiprocessing computer platform, selection of the RTOS, design of process distribution and inter-process communication, development of drivers and glue software. There will be other important implementation issues worth to mention: integration of video hardware elements necessary to acquire and store video images from multiple camera streams, development of the user interfaces for installation, maintenance and use of both prototypes, accessory software such as configuration databases. Given its promising appealing from a commercial point of view, two football trial applications will be purposed to demonstrate the capabilities of both prototypes in working conditions as close as possible to the real thing. Important efforts will be also employed in dissemination activities and surveys for new market opportunities.Milestones:- Develop an Image Interpolation system for wide scenarios based on a new simplified computer vision approach;- Develop a prototype suitable for interactive multi-view presentations of still interpolated images;- Develop a prototype for the interactive real-time interpolation of moving images;%- Disseminate and promote the technology in the market of sports transmissions for broadcast TV, digital terrestrial or satellite TV, cable and Internet;- Explore alternative business opportunities.
