Objective
Cavitations in fluids can cause erosion resulting in severe material damages of propellers and rudders. This may lead to loss of efficiency and even in a total loss of propeller blades. Erosion induced by cavitations can be predicted only by using engineering methods, because the physical process behind is only partly understood. Therefore a scientifically based method to predict erosion induced by cavitations is needed. The main aim of the work is to develop a practical tool to assess the risk of erosion on ship propellers and rudders. Prediction methods (the experimental and theoretical ones) that allow a quantitative full-scale erosion prediction shall be developed. The deliverables will be tested experimental methods and an analytical code to predict cavitations induced erosion. Design guidelines to minimize the risk shall be developed.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
