Cyanobacteria attack rocks : control and preventive strategies to avoid damage caused by cyanobacteria and associated microorganisms in roman hypogean monuments (CATS)

Objetivo

In Roman hypogea the abundance of nutrients in the lithic substrata, the input of compounds from air and waters and the high humidity, all combined with the presence of artificial illumination, provide a suitable niche for cyanobacteria that can make use of the spectral emission of the lamps. CATS proposes to develop physical and biotechnological methodologies that may limit the formation of cyanobacteria-dominated bio films on rock surfaces. A two-phase strategy will be developed in order to prevent or control the growth of bio films. A pilot study will test the effectiveness of appropriate wavelengths and of anti-cyanobacterial bio molecules in limiting phototropic growth. The project will develop a micro sensor-based portable prototype for early warning and monitoring of bio films The main results include data on the type of damage produced biologically on rock surfaces and the major factors that control the development and growth of bio films
