A BALKAN AND EASTERN EUROPEAN NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE FOR THE DIFFUSION OF MATHEMATICS FOR INDUSTRY EXPERTISE

Objective

MATHIND is a network for mathematics for industry covering the Balkan and CEEC region. The network members comprise university departments with an active interest in mathematics for industry. The problem addressed by the network is the communication's gap between mathematicians and industrial users that prevents the uptake of the latest mathematical techniques by industry within the Balkan-CEEC region. The objectives of the network are to establish a continuous dialogue with industry whereby industry's RTD and training needs can be identified. It is intended to meet these needs through co-operative cross-border research projects, student placements and training activities. Network activities will contribute to the modernisation, competitiveness and convergence of regional industry. MATHIND is a network for mathematics for industry covering the Balkan and CEEC region. OBJECTIVES
MATHIND objectives are:
a) Motivate mathematical research and research partnership synergies in areas critical to the development of industry in the Balkan and CEEC,
b) Develop appropriate communication mechanisms between mathematical communities and the industrial and public sectors that allow the leveraging of the network's capabilities and knowledge base for the provision of timely and effective solutions to industrial needs.
c) Identify industry's needs for trained mathematicians and mathematical training and to meet these needs through appropriate delivery mechanisms.
d) Act as a knowledge provider for research results and applications for the wider community.
Such research results will be both internally generated and collated from world-wide sources. Adaptation of generic solutions to particular problems will form part of this objective.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A series of industrial workshops will be held with industry and public sector players. These workshops, together with subsequent discussions and visits, will identify real industrial needs for mathematics and mathematicians. Leveraging solutions across the Balkan-CEEC region will be emphasised. The momentum given to academic-industry communications through these actions will be sustained throughout the lifetime of the project. Once identified industrial needs will be met by a variety of mechanisms. Co-operative cross-border research teams with industry will address particular problems or those common to a particular industrial sector. Where appropriate, student placements will be made to resolve industrial problems and provide industrial experience to the student. Training needs will be met by a series of training events aimed at practising industrial mathematicians and students. In parallel with these training events a web-based postgraduate qualification in mathematics for industry will be designed and implemented. It will be incorporated into the partners teaching across the region. The course will be based on stated industrial needs and will be very responsive to industrial experience shortages. The network will be supported by a user-friendly web-based infrastructure that will also act as a resource for industry, giving examples of mathematical applications in the Balkan-CEEC context. There will be an evaluation exercise towards the end of the project. Industry will judge the contribution of the network's activities and the value of the network to them. A language document on the status of mathematics for industry within the Balkan-CEEC region will be produced by the network, which together with the results of the evaluation exercise will be used to decide on the future of the network and what changes may be necessary.
