Development and modernisation of the method of organ pipe design

Obiettivo

New, innovative design methods of organ pipes are needed in organ building in order to ensure high quality sound and to reduce costs. Organs are designed according to the scaling rules established in the last century. Scaling means that the diameter/length ratio of the pipes should be increased towards the higher pitch region in order to keep a quasi-uniform timbre. State-of -the-art design methods cannot ensure even timbre for the pipe ranks. Abetter design method could be developed in the frame of a CRAFT project. The objectives of the intended research are as follows: Development of a scientifically founded method for pipe scaling to ensure even timbre within the pipe ranks.- Development of a computer program for the design of the pipes.- Development of an instrument for helping the training of young organ builders on voicing adjustment. A cost reduction of about 15-20% and a better quality of the sound of the pipe organs may be expected. Search for partners, detailed project planning and writing the proposal would be perfumed in the frame of this Step 1 (Exploratory Award) project
