Aladin training network

Objective

The ALADIN project, through its Toulouse central place, has already an excellent track record in training of foreign visitors: 5 completed PhDs and 4 on their way and at least 16 person x years of training through shorter stays during the eight years of existence of the common effort. The financial support asked through this proposal would permit to offer PhD and post-Doc positions on the following topics: non-hydrostatic modeling of the atmospheric flow, diabetic forcing at small scales (when both "resolved" and "parameterized" computations mix their effects), coupling of global models with limited area ones, use of the optimal control formalism to assimilate at the finest possible scales remote sensed data about clouds and rainfall, noise control in both model runs and data assimilation procedures. None of this topic, taken individually, is likely to be the vector for a complete breakthrough in atmospheric science. But, like always in the "NWP industry", it is the combination of individual nice research steps that will make the quality of the service delivered by European NMSs to their citizen and/or clients.
