Digital Design and Development of tourism products and services

Cel

The Tourism Package as product consists of various modules provided by different Tourism Suppliers such as hotels, incoming agents, airlines, tour operator etc. Although the final product is complete by composition of the different modules above, in the today practice of tourism business the development is not a result of coordinated and distributed work but a compromise on the estimations of each supplier.

The 3D project aims at the development of new methods and tools to support digital design and development of tourism products (tourism packages), by means of distributed cooperation. It will significantly contribute to the modernisation of product design and development of processes in Tourism Industry (using digital platforms) and to the improvement of product quality. 3D will also enable Tourist Suppliers to capture and pool customer's requirements and share resources in product design, development and maintenance phases.

Objectives:
The 3D project aims at the development of new methods and tools to enable Tourism Chain participants to digitally design, develop and maintain Tourism Products (Tourism Packages) and to organise these works by distributed co-operation.
Specific, measurable objectives are:
.To examine the needs of the all the organisations involved in the design and development of Tourist Products and the specific needs of the participating user companies.
.To develop a model for digital design, development and maintenance of Tourism Products
.To develop a methodology to help small Tourist Suppliers to effectively participate in the product design, development and maintenance tasks
.To develop an innovative, intelligent software system to support digital design and development of tourism products
.To develop efficient, user-friendly browsing facilities to support clients (retailers, direct clients) to easily access this information
.To fully test and validate and disseminate the project results

Work description:
The proposed project will research and develop new methods and tools to support digital design and development of tourism products (tourism packages) by means of distributed cooperation. This cooperation will enhance their current products and open new Business Channels to SMEs of the Sector. In order to achieve the objectives of the project, the users will be asked for their requirements in terms of how they perform similar tasks in their companies. Additionally, other 1000 SME tourism companies will be surveyed. These detailed issues and requirements will be analysed and a User Requirements Document will be developed.

In the second step the consortium will develop a model for digital design and development of tourism products and services. A methodology will also be developed to help SME tourism suppliers to effectively participate in the product design and development tasks. At this step, the delivery of the Open Business Procedures Manual will provide practical information and comprehensive guidance to support standardisation of the relevant processes in small companies.

Then the consortium will develop an innovative, software system using intelligent software agents to support the digital design and development of tourism products.
This system will provide facilities to support
(a) local SME Suppliers to maintain and provide information about their products and
(b) tour operators to effectively use this information in order to design and develop the final product.

Finally the system will fully integrated and validated from the consortium users and external pool of at least 20 other SMEs of the tourism sector.

The results of the project will be widely disseminated using conference participations, workshops, postings in official and relative Internet Sites and available through intermediate organizations.

To develop efficient, user-friendly browsing facilities to support clients (retailers, direct clients) to easily access this information

To fully test and validate and disseminate the project results
[1] A complete brightness model based on neurodynamics. This was justified by the necessity to have a complete 2D brightness working model that will be able to explain most (if not all) significant brightness effects.
[2] A software tool useful for visually optimizing image compression algorithms and image quality assessment. The tool is based on the MATLAB environment. MATLAB toolboxes are libraries of functions that customize MATLAB for solving particular classes of problems.
[3] A JPEG 2000 evaluation tool (J2MT). This was motivated by the necessity to evaluate AMOVIP compression results with the new JPEG 2000 standard that is actually under development. The J2MT is a research and educational aid that facilitates the use of the new standard.
[4] Patent. A patent entitled "Adaptive luminance circuit based on local interactions" has been presented at the Spanish patent office in Madrid. The document of the patent has been included as an Annex in the final report.
