Techniques for the quantification of methane hydrate in european continental margins (HYDRATECH)

Ziel

HYDRATECH is a project to develop a technique that can identify and quantify the amount of methane hydrate in the sediments beneath continental margins. Methane hydrate is a solid formed from methane and water that is stable in the conditions of temperature and pressure prevalent in most continental margins in water depths deeper than about 500 m. The presence of hydrate is a potential hazard for exploitation of continental margins, because if destabilised it could release large volumes of gas. The technique will use seismic p waves and s waves recorded on the seabed to measure characteristic seismic properties of sediment containing hydrate and their distribution through the sediment column. Theoretical and experimental approaches will be used to establish relationships for the effect of the presence of hydrate on the seismic properties of sediments, so that they can be used, inversely, to determine hydrate quantities from seismic measurements.
