Objective Several countries in the European Community have active programs in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) of cancer. Also in tee USA, two institutions carry out clinical trials. BNCT has long been pursued in Japan. Recently, modern sources for BNCT have been designed or constructed in Europe and in other countries. In order to put these into service for treating patients, information is required concerning the effect of the neutron beam on healthy issue. In this measure, information on the physical properties and radiobiological effects of the neutron sources will be intercom pared. A predictive tool for new neutron sources is to be developed. With a predictive tool, the time lag between finalizing a neutron source and making use of it for treatment of patient's migtht hereby be shortened, for the benefit of patients suffering from cancer.
