High performance scratch-resistant coatings applied to thermoplastic articles by in-mould coating processes

Objectif

One of the major drawbacks of thermoplastic materials (widely used to produce shaped articles) is the unsatisfactory scratch and wear resistance, leading to reduced lifetimes of the shaped articles due to functional and/or aesthetical reasons. The strategic objective to the proposed research is to develop and evaluate a new flexible high performance scratch resistant coating material in combination with an in-mould coating technology usable in the injection molding process to provide a coating technology for the protection of a large variety of commodity thermoplastics, providing good adhesion to the sub- strate material without the need of additional pre-treatment and, if necessary, high transparency. It is intended to show that it is possible to match specific and highly sophisticated technical requirements with respect to both the material and the process. Specific objectives are the development of a new composite coating material, which meets the special requirements of the molding processes, leading to new products with exceptional economical and ecological selling arguments and the development of an in-mould coating process to apply and cure these coatings.
