Implementation of a cord blood allocation network

Objetivo

Residual blood from the umbilical cord of neonates (cord blood, CB) has become unimportant alternative to bone marrow as source of transplantable hematopoieticstem cells in the treatment of leukaemia and other diseases. To support the CBspecific advantages over other stem cell sources an adequate allocation mechanism must be implemented. It is imperative to minimise the duration of the allocation procedure. This will have direct positive impact to the transplantation outcome and therapy costs. The implementation of a cord blood allocation network by using modern workflow management tools will ensure an equal chance for each patient togged the best transplant available and, thus, solve possible allocation conflicts. By constantly analysing the systems operation a cyclical mechanism is fed to improve the allocation process and the quality of service. The deployment of such quality chain is also part of the objectives of the study.
