Computerised Automatic Long Line Fishing System

Objective

This proposal is prepared with the help of an Exploratory award which included a Research Feasibility study.

The proposal addresses new techniques to modernise long line fishing which is one of the most selective fishing method available and thus very environmentally friendly. This concept is to prepare a computerised automatic system that handles the long line, checks it and repairs if necessary. Then the line is stored within the system until it is baited and shot out again. In this way the system handles the long line automatically from when it is hauled from the sea until it is shot out again. This system promises to reduce the manpower needed to attend the long line considerably and even more important is that it saves at least 60% of deck space compared to existing machinery, which only performs parts of what this new system shall do.

Research feasibility study has shown that the concept works but there is need to define better and test the function of each unit that goes into the system. This will be done for the units separately and then the units will be combined into a system that will be tested both ashore and at sea. Exploitation is expected to return the investment cost within two years from the start of production.

If this project is successful it will aid coastal communities enormously by making long line fishing more economically viable for fishermen. And as long line fishing is an environmentally friendly way of fishing it will contribute to rational and sustainable use of natural resources.
