Operational models and information tools for industrial applications of eco/toxicological impact assessments

Cel

The general problem addressed by the project is the eco- (in) efficiency of European industry regarding potentially hazardous chemicals. The proposed project will provide better methods and information tools needed for decision-making regarding these chemicals, enhancing the capability of industry to select more environmentally benign compounds.

The basis on which new and extended LCIA methods and an expert web-based information system will be developed are:
a) comparisons between life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods for characterisation of chemicals' potential effects and (environmental) risk assessment (E)RA methods;
b) comparisons between various current LCIA methods.

The project is structured in four stages starting with:
1) a problem definition stage where a wide group of stakeholders together with industry/authority and research partners provide input for;
2) the industry/authority case study based R&D work, which results will be lesled in;
3) the five case studies. The results will then be;
4) presented in the dissemination/implementation stage. The feasibility of including LCA as a tool in chemical regulation will also be studied.
