Objective
ARION is aiming to provide a new generation of Digital Library services for the searching and retrieval of digital scientific collections that reside within research and consultancy organizations. ARION advances the findings of previous studies in this area and consolidates the work of international interoperability standard development to provide a system that is complementary to established scientific practices in these organizations. ARION will be a federated open system and will be developed in association with national data providers, scientific researchers and SMEs to ensure that the project meets their needs.
Objectives:
The key feature of ARION is to enable the dynamic production of scientific information, which is unprecedented in a Digital Library context. Unlike traditional DL objects, scientific objects are complicated candidates for re-use unless precise information is stored within the DL about their use.
The objective of a DL of scientific collections focuses on a threefold effort:
1. Develop a conceptual evolution of Digital Libraries of scientific collections
2. Develop new techniques and methods necessary for data interoperability and DL-operation
3. Ensure adoption and ensure future exploitation of the ARION research results
Work description:
We propose an advanced architecture for a Digital Library of scientific collections. It promotes advanced features of Digital Library technology and in addition it promotes features that take into account the content and characteristics of scientific collections. The ARION software system will be stored in the information technology organization servers (at least) and will be comprised of middleware interconnecting networked heterogeneous repositories of scientific collections. In addition, a user interface designed to work on a web browser at the user computer (with Internet access), which will be reached via a web address will provide access to the ARION system. A number of tools will also be developed for provider use in order to publish and install scientific collections into a scientific digital library. These tools will be part of the ARION architecture. Specifically, we propose an advanced middleware architecture that seamlessly integrates Digital Library, Intelligent Information Integration, and Workflow technologies. It is comprised of three main modules: the Metadata Search Engine, the Knowledge Base System, and the Workflow Runtime System, which co-operate to provide the user with the desired functionality.
Milestones:
The ARION project will result in a software system composed of the following components: a middleware for interconnecting networked scientific collections, an adaptive user interface for a scientific collections digital library and a knowledge base for scientific collection rules of use stored in the system servers.
-The project met all of the objectives and delivered the stated project results. The software is continually tested by the project partners. Enhancements to the software, based on testing and feedback from the project partners, are implemented on a regular basis;
-A post-project exploitation strategy for ARION has been developed, in collaboration with project partners and end users. The strategy which has been accepted by the project partners is described in deliverable D5;
- A report on system usability and business plan for the ARION prototype.
