Objectif ----------------Reference about Dr. Sara Gutiérrez I have known Ms Sara Gutiérrez since 1993, year in which she started the Doctoral Programme in Genetics, in the Department of Genetics and Microbiology of the UAB. The programme included 32 credits over a period of two years and 9 credits may be obtained with a research project. Sara was one of the best postgraduate students in the courses of Mutagenesis and Genetic Toxicology and she completed an interesting Master Thesis on the "First data on the cytogenetic biomonitoring in a group of patients treated with the radioisotope 131I", achieving a good training and an excellent mark. During the doctoral period, Sara displayed a good knowledge of genetics, mutagenesis, molecular and cell biology, and genetic toxicology, in both fundamental and practical fields , which enabled her to design experiments and complete them with success. Over this period she worked extremely hard and performed high quality experiments, which results have been published in various prestigious scientific journals, as indicated in her curriculum vitae. In the course of these experiments she mastered several new techniques and learnt a great deal about cell cultures, mutagenesis, and genotoxicity testing. Moreover, she has always been able to explain and discuss her results clearly in conversation, seminars and meetings. Last December Sara presented her Ph.D. dissertation Thesis in the School of Biological Sciences of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) on "Biomonitoring of patients treated with the radioisotope 131I" , obtaining the mention CUM LAUDE. With reference to her knowledge of cytogenetic techniques using human lymphocytes, she knows the assays for chromosome aberrations, sister-chromatid exchanges and micronuclei very well.
