Objectif Bente Madsen has been a Ph.D.-student in my laboratory from August the 1st 1996 to July the 31st 1999; she has been working on gene regulation of the vasoactive intestinal polypeptide receptor type-l gene in breast cancer cell lines. She has with experimental and intellectual talent investigated two extensive projects, resulting in three first author papers, one published in Cancer Research. She has presented her data at international and national meetings both orally and as posters. She has furthermore, obtained a third position in an oral presentation competition for young scientists presenting her own data. Bente Madsen has during her Ph.D.-studies been able to set up new techniques as well as optimising excising techniques. She masters a wide range of molecular biology and biochemical techniques: including RNA analysis (Purification, Northern and slot blotting), Nuclear Run-on, transfection, luciferase assay, DNA cloning, DNA sequencing, PCR, RT-PCR, mammalian cell cultures, preparation of cell fragments, and binding experiments on membrane fragment and intact cells. In addition to her research work Bente Madsen has co-ordinated and supervised the work of undergraduate project students and laboratory technicians. Bente Madsen is a very energetic and hard working scientist. She always participates very active in scientific discussions and has as a scientist an analytical attitude to the results. She is bright and creative and her work is original; she is easy to get along with and is very popular with technologists. Ph.D.-students and postdocs in the laboratory. The Marie Curie Individual Fellowship will be of great importance for Bente Madsen future career. It will give her the opportunity to pursue her career in breast cancer biology in an Imperial Cancer Research Fund laboratory with an international reputation in this field. I hereby highly recommend Bente Madsen for the Marie Curie Individual Fellowship.
