Amber/Green Emitters targeting High Temperature Applications

Ziel

The objective of this RTD project is to research and develop high-speed green and amber (510 nm and 570 nm) transceiver components based on novel resonant cavity light emitting diodes (RCLEDS) and complementary resonant cavity detectors (RCDS) fabricated from the AlGaN/GaN/GaInN material system. These components are needed for the next generation of plastic optical fibre (POF) multi-media optical data buses for automotive and avionic applications. These components will therefore operate at the attenuating minima of POF, support data rates of 500 Mb/s and function at temperatures of up to 120 degrees Centigrade. The nitrides intrinsically have good thermal properties because of their large band-gap and emit at the short wavelengths required. The propose RCLED structure will, however, improve quantum efficiency, coupling efficiency and the thermal stability of the emission wavelength over conventional LED structures. The components developed within the project will finally be assessed within test-bed POF networks simulating avionic and automotive applications and their environments.
