High Temperature Electronics Network 3

Cel

High temperature electronics (HTE) refers to the operation of electronic components or systems in high ambient temperature environments. This is a relatively new area of technology that industry is only just beginning to take up and benefit from. The High Temperature Electronics Network 3 (HITEN 3) project covers an extension to the previous HITEN 1 and HITEN 2 projects, funded under the ESPRIT programmes.

The aims of HITEN are:
to provide and maintain a world class information resource on HTE;
to facilitate the education and training of workers in HTE;
to offer networking and brokerage opportunities to members; and
to raise the profile of HTE on the world stage as a technology of strategic importance.

Members of the network will benefit by improving their competitive position with the introduction of innovative products, contributing to the sustainable development of the European economy while marketing on a global basis.

Objectives:
HITEN has four major objectives:
1) to provide and maintain a world class information resource on high temperature electronics;
2) to facilitate the education and training of workers in HTE;
3) to offer networking and brokerage opportunities to members;
4) to raise the profile of HTE on the world stage as a technology of strategic importance.

As a technological field that is undergoing rapid development, it is natural that HTE is a multidisciplinary topic with significant contributions provided by worker in many different areas. One of the great successes of the first two phases of HITEN has been the facilitation of communications between these disparate groups. HITEN 3 will continue to provide a world class databank to workers in HTE, including the dissemination of information, the promotion of communications between organisations and the education of workers in the field. The promotion of HTE to non-members will remain an important element of the activities

Work description:
HITEN 3 will continue the successes of HITEN 2 by maintaining the information resources and services that have proved popular with members, improving and updating where this will deliver a positive return. In addition, a range of new activities is proposed to extend the scope of the membership benefits of HITEN and to bring new methods of delivery.

There are four main themes:
a world class information resource;
education and training for both members and non-members;
networking and brokerage opportunities to develop business and introduce innovative products;
and to raise the profile of high temperature electronics to encourage its take-up within industry.

Some 150 member organisations currently benefit from established services that include databases of HE literature, qualified components, and organisations active in HTE;
regular news updates of developments and product launches;
and technical and market reports on strategic aspects of HTE.

For these existing services, HITEN 3 will update the market survey;
increase the frequency of news updates;
strengthen the brokerage opportunities in response to the growing range of products now available;
and extend the number and topics of technical seminars held around Europe.

Furthermore, the HITEN conference is no established on the calendar and the 2001 conference will be supported through HITEN 3. Following discussion with members and consultation with the HITEN Industrial Advisory Board of member representatives, HITEN 3 will also introduce a number of new services.

These comprise:
1) a rapid publishing service to offer workers in HTE a forum for public dissemination of their work. No current journal deals effectively with HTE and papers on the subject are dispersed across a wide variety of publications;
2) a programme of raising the awareness of industry towards the benefits of using HTE;
3) a database of global, joint projects in HTE;
4) improving the means of delivery of services to members using new technology.

Milestones:
Issue an updated Market Survey and industrial Who's Who for HTE.
Send hard copy and e-mail news updates to all members.
Maintain up to date HTE literature & components databases.
Issue one authoritative HTE technology report.
Provide a brokerage service to facilitate contact between members.
Organise meetings on technical and commercial aspects of HTE.
Host the biennial HITEN conference.
Launch a rapid publishing service for HTE.
Promote wider awareness of HTE.
Create a HTE joint project database.
