Isis pulsed muon facility

Objective

Description:

ISIS provides the world's most powerful source of pulsed muons and neutrons for condensed matter investigations. It is unique in Europe, and from its inception has attracted visiting researchers from most EC countries. Positively charged 'surface' muons are produced from a thin (5-10mm) graphite target placed in the extracted proton beam. The muons are collected and conducted to three experimental areas using a variety of magnetic and electrostatic beamline components. The complete installation is known as the 'EC Muon Facility' and was completed in 1994 following the award of a contract in the EC's Large Installation Plan (LIP- Framework Programme 2). Muon Spin Rotation or Relaxation (mSR) experiments are carried out on two permanently installed spectrometers, MuSR and EMU, and there is in addition a development beamline, DEVA, used for advancing new techniques. Research applications of pulsed mSR include the study of magnetic, superconducting, metallic, semiconducting, ion-conducting, amorphous and molecular materials.

Application:

Access to the ISIS Muon Facility is supported financially by the European Community's 'Access to Research Infrastructures Action of the Improving Human Potential Programme'. Applications for this support is available as part of the normal ISIS procedure for beamtime applications and requires the completion of the ISIS Application Form; there are two calls for experimental proposals in April and October each year. Electronic versions of the application form are available on the World Wide Web (http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk). Further information can be provided by Dr. Gavin Williams, Head of ISIS Diffraction and Muon Division, E-mail ßw.g.williams@rl.ac.uk±.
