Southampton Oceanography Centre: Facilities, Access and Cooperation (SOCFAC) gives access to a spectrum of analytical instruments, located within the Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC); a purpose-built facility housing the School of Ocean and Earth Science (University of Southampton), four government research divisions (NERC) and the UK, Research Vessel Service. Over 400 academic and research staff plus over 100 doctorate and MSc students work in the building. The facility offers access to a range of mass spectrometry and other equipment.

The mass spectrometers include:
i) noble gas for tritium, helium;
ii) thermal ionisation (TIMS) for Sr, Pb, U & Nd;
iii) magnet-sector-based multicollector ICPMS;
iv) quad-based ICPMS; (both of the ICP mass spectrometers are coupled to a UV ablation source;
v) gas-sourced spectrometer for oxygen and carbon.

In addition, SOCFAC offers a suite of radionuclide instrumentation for low-level environmental applications; a Vibrational Spectra Laboratory (laser Raman and FT-IR); an Organic Maturity Laboratory (reflectance and infra-red) and finally an ICP-AES. Sixteen academic and technical staff operate the equipment. The facility will support about 29 visitors per year totalling 230 experimental days.
